I love reading nonfiction books, especially ones about nature, zoology, brain chemistry, and psychology. I also love the classics, especially Victorian lit. Mysteries are my go-to relaxing reads, and I read fantasy and sci fi when they come recommended. I'm definitely open to new genres! KimMiE"'s Reviews:

I exist as either a small canid with thick fur, pointed ears, and neat black feet, or a young woman. Neither are safe forms in a world run by men.

CBR 17 BINGO: Review (see ElCicco’s 2024 review) BINGO: Review, Purple, I, Red, Borrow When I started seeing reviews for The Fox Wife last year, I was intrigued. It wasn’t until I finally picked up a copy from my library that I realized the author is the same person who wrote The Ghost Bride, which I read and enjoyed back in 2014. Now I was really excited. The Fox Wife is a lovely and heartbreaking novel that borrows from Chinese mythology around foxes. Taking place […]

I’m on a roll with Japanese stories containing cats! (This review is cat approved)

The Blanket Cats by Kiyoshi Shigematsu

CBR 17 BINGO: “B” (for “Blanket”) On a recent visit to my local library, I was attracted to this book by the adorable illustration on the cover. Reading the book jacket, I learned that The Blanket Cats is a collection of seven stories about a pet shop in Tokyo that rents out cats for three days and two nights. Each cat comes with a special blanket to which they are very attached (do not lose or wash that blanket!). Some customers have practical reasons for […]

I was hoping to be able to relate to this book, and holy hell, I could not

CBR 17 BINGO: Borrow (I borrowed this book from a friend who read it for her book club) As a woman who feels like she’s been stuck in perimenopause hell forever, my ears perk up when I hear about works that touch on this topic. So when my friend mentioned that All Fours centers on a woman in her mid-forties who is experiencing some of these challenges, I asked to borrow it. I had seen a couple of reviews here on CBR, so I knew […]

Sometimes a beautiful cover and a simple story are enough

The Wood at Midwinter by Susanna Clarke

CBR 17 BINGO: Purple (see cover) Illustrated by Victoria Sawdon It’s been five years since the publication of Piranesi, and 21 years (!) since the release of the spellbinding Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, so I know I’m not the only fan who squealed with delight at the arrival of a new (tiny) book by Susanna Clarke. I love the existence of this book, but I must warn you up front that it’s a short story, and barely that. You can read it in 20 […]

The final case for Susan Ryeland?

Marble Hall Murders by Anthony Horowitz

by Leave a Comment

CBR 17 BINGO: Red (see cover) Anthony Horowitz is back with what is most likely the last Susan Ryeland/Atticus Pünd mystery. I’m sad to see the series wind down, but how many times can a person get involved with the same franchise to disastrous results without breaking the audience’s suspension of disbelief? (This isn’t Jurassic Park for heaven’s sake.) If you’re a fan of Magpie Murders and Moonflower Murders, you might be wondering how Horowitz could squeeze another novel out of this premise, what with […]

On the Calculation of Volume II by Solvej Balle

CBR 17 BINGO: Green (see cover image) Translated by Barbara Haveland Back in April, I read the first installment of Solvej Balle’s seven-part series On the Calculation of Volume and was impressed by its poetic sublimity. I wondered how she could possibly extend the concept into six more novels. I enjoyed part II, but I’m still wondering where this is going. To recap, in part I, bookseller Tara Selter is experiencing “broken time.” She appears to be caught in a loop where she keeps experiencing […]
