I love reading nonfiction books, especially ones about nature, zoology, brain chemistry, and psychology. I also love the classics, especially Victorian lit. Mysteries are my go-to relaxing reads, and I read fantasy and sci fi when they come recommended. I'm definitely open to new genres! Not a bad cozy mystery

Still Life by Louise Penny

July 4, 2020 by KimMiE" 2 Comments

CBR12 BINGO: No Money! I’ve noticed two trends during the pandemic that are relevant to this category: first, people seem to be taking time to declutter their homes; second, since many Goodwill stores have been closed, free stuff is often just laying about. On one of my many socially distant walks around my neighborhood, I spotted a box of mystery novels that someone was giving away. Not wanting to be greedy, I helped myself only to the first in the series, as it looked like […]

Major Insights: People on the Internet Are Racist, Like Porn, and Lie on Social Media

Everybody Lies: Big Data, New Data, and What the Internet Can Tell Us About Who We Really Are by Seth Stephens-Davidowitz

July 4, 2020 by KimMiE" Leave a Comment

CBR12 BINGO: How-To I work in Marketing, and these days it’s all about data. How are you going to measure it? What does success look like? These are the mundane questions I have to answer every day, so reading this book was a bit like work. But, it fits a BINGO square, so I benefitted in the end. Also, enough interesting nuggets are included to make it mildly interesting. The main takeaway is that asking people to complete surveys is pretty pointless, because people lie […]

This is a book review

This Is a Book by Demetri Martin

June 18, 2020 by KimMiE" Leave a Comment

Damn you, pandemic. I legitimately can’t tell anymore whether comedians are mildly amusing, or whether they are sidesplittingly hilarious and I’m just not into laughing these days. I became familiar with Demetri Martin through his Comedy Central series Important Things with Demetri Martin. I definitely recall laughing out loud at some of his drawings, so no surprise that the cartoons and graphs included in This Is a Book are the strongest bits. The essays and short stories in this collection are kind of a mixed bag. […]

Advanced Bird Nerdery

The Most Perfect Thing: Inside (and Outside) a Bird's Egg by Tim Birkhead

June 14, 2020 by KimMiE" 3 Comments

With the exception, perhaps, of the most dedicated vegan, all of us have cracked open an egg at some point in our lives: to scramble for breakfast, to make an egg drop soup, or, for those more reckless in our diet, to whip up a rich creme brûlée. Yet how many of us have ever paused to wonder about the complex mechanisms that go into the creation of the egg itself? A 19th-century abolitionist named Thomas Wentworth Higginson once said, “If required on pain of death […]

Victor Frankenstein asks Reddit: AITA?

Frankenstein; Or, the Modern Prometheus by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley

May 23, 2020 by KimMiE" 15 Comments

r/AmItheAsshole * Posted by u/doomedbyfate 1 hour ago AITA for bringing a creature to life and then abandoning him, resulting in him vowing revenge and murdering a bunch of people? I (20ish M) grew up in Geneva. My mother died when I was young, and her greatest wish was for me to marry Elizabeth, my adopted “cousin.” When I went off to college to study sciences, I discovered the secret to bestowing life. I can’t tell you how I did it, and when you read […]

It’s essential that you behave as if your decisions matter, even though you know they don’t

Exhalation by Ted Chiang

May 3, 2020 by KimMiE" 3 Comments

Even if you haven’t ready any of Ted Chiang’s stories, you may already be familiar with his Nebula and Hugo Award-winning work “Story of Your Life,” which was adapted into the Academy Award-nominated film Arrival. I haven’t read that story (yet), but the concepts in the film intrigued me enough that when I heard about this new collection, I was eager to read it. If you have seen Arrival, you won’t be surprised that Chiang’s writing continues to explore ideas about time, free will, responsibility, and […]
