I love reading nonfiction books, especially ones about nature, zoology, brain chemistry, and psychology. I also love the classics, especially Victorian lit. Mysteries are my go-to relaxing reads, and I read fantasy and sci fi when they come recommended. I'm definitely open to new genres! Network Effect by Martha Wells

CBR16 BINGO: Tech, because Murderbot is a construct of robotic and human parts (Obviously) As my Bingo board can confirm, I’ve been zipping through the Murderbot Diaries this summer and having a good time getting to know SecUnit and its “friends.” Book #5, Network Effect, is the longest entry in the series so far, the first “full-length” novel in a series previously comprising novellas. In Network Effect, Dr. Mensah, SecUnit’s favorite human, sends it on a research mission with a couple of new characters–Mensah’s teenage […]

Starter Villain by John Scalzi

Many people fantasize about an estranged relative dying and leaving them a fortune or a thriving business. Few people would indulge in this fantasy if the estranged relative’s business were villainy, and if, in addition to the job, they inherited a long list of enemies. This is the situation Charlie Fitzer finds himself in when his Uncle Jake dies and he’s visited by his uncle’s second-in-command, Mathilda Morrison. Even before Morrison shows up, Charlie has problems. Once a successful journalist, he’s now an underemployed substitute […]

Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang

CBR16 BINGO: Celestial, because the first story is about humans building a tower into the heavens Four years ago I fell in love with Ted Chiang’s short story collection Exhalation, and I’ve finally made good on the promise to myself to read Stories of Your Life and Others. If you’ve read any of his work, you won’t be shocked to hear that this is the most moving, inventive, and thought-provoking collection I’ve read in years. Ted Chiang, a graduate of Brown University with a B.S. […]

The Princess Bride, S. Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure by William Goldman

CBR16 BINGO: Rings, because “Mawidge is a dweam wiffin a dweam.” The Princess Bride has been on my TBR list for a long time, mostly to satisfy my curiosity about the source material that led to the creation of one of the most beloved movies of the 1980s, not to mention one of my personal top 5. I was surprised to discover that many of the most memorable lines of dialogue come directly from the book (“You keep using that word. I don’t think it […]

Exit Strategy by Martha Wells

CBR16 BINGO: Cult, because Murderbot fans are a little cult of our own Exit Strategy, entry #4 in the Murderbot Diaries, picks up pretty much where Rogue Protocol left off, with a bunch of humans trying to kill Murderbot. It seems like humans either want to kill our SecUnit hero or make friends with it, and it’s difficult to say which option horrifies it more. Although I was less enamored of the third entry in the series than I was of the first two, I was […]

Hey, Boo

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

CBR16 BINGO: Bananas, because this is a frequently banned or challenged book, and banning books is bananas. I have different reasons for re-reading certain novels. Sometimes I re-read a favorite book simply because I know it will make me happy. Sometimes I want visit with characters who feel like old friends. And sometimes it’s purely practical, like when I need clarity before continuing a series. With a novel like To Kill a Mockingbird, which many of us read in high school, a re-read is a […]
