I've been doing this since 2015, and though I'm not going to read a hundred books a year, I plan on doing this for the foreseeable future. I also maintain the Cannonball Read database, and make infrequent updates on our reading habits. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: ingres77's Quick Questions interview.)

ingres77's Reviews:

I have nothing new to say about an 85 year old book, unsurprisingly.

Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck

September 8, 2023 by ingres77 2 Comments

John Steinbeck grew up in the first decade of the 20th century on some of the most fertile soil in the world, and as a teenager he spent his summers working on nearby ranches. More than 20 years later, he used these experiences to inform the story that would become this novella. Of Mice and Men is about two migrant workers, George Milton and Lennie Small, fleeing one farm and looking for work at another. Lennie is large, strong, and mentally disabled and George is […]

For my young reader, at least, it was a huge success

Hidden Figures: Young Readers' Edition by Margot Lee Shetterly

August 20, 2023 by ingres77 4 Comments

I’ve been struggling all summer to find a book to read with my 8 year old. He’s a smart kid, but he’s not really all that interested in the things I remember being into as a kid. I keep trying books I grew up on, and he’s not really been interested in any of them. That may be a maturity thing, though. I didn’t really get into reading until I was in middle school. But he loves math. At the end of last year, he […]

I seldom find what I’m looking for in romance novels, but I keep trying them anyway

Just A Heartbeat Away by Cara Bastone

August 19, 2023 by ingres77 2 Comments

My wife first read Cara Bastone three years ago, and convinced me to give Call Me Maybe a shot. I loved it. We then downloaded this book from Audible and started listening to the audiobook on a trip we took. I got into it, but she didn’t. So we turned the book off, and I never really went back to it. Well, I just wrapped up a pretty heavy book last week, and took a vacation in Georgia this week, so I needed something to […]

Still not caught up on my reviews, but I’m working on it.

Streets of Laredo by Larry McMurtry

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien

July 16, 2023 by ingres77 Leave a Comment

I’m doing terribly at keeping up with my reviews this year, so I’m going to do a review dump. Streets of Laredo by Larry McMurtry (4.5/5) (Spoilers abound.) Lonesome Dove was a revelatory experience for me. It was that rare experience that I knew to appreciate while I was reading it. Rather than devouring the book and then mourning it’s end, I was able to savor the novel and drag it out a little bit. I was still a little skeptical about reading the follow-up, […]

I’ve got a few reviews I need to write, but Jon Ronson ruined my plans

The Psychopath Test: A Journey Through the Madness Industry by Jon Ronson

The Debutante: From High Society to White Supremacy by Jon Ronson

June 28, 2023 by ingres77 Leave a Comment

I’m sitting on….three other reviews at the moment. But over the course of three or four days, I listened to these audio books, and everything else has been put on hold. I came to these books through a bit of a circuitous route. Jon Ronson was interviewed on the podcast Knowledge Fight, a podcast that critically explores the world of Alex Jones. Ronson has long written about both white supremacy and conspiracy theories, and Alex Jones is firmly planted at the nexus of those two […]

I don’t want to be that guy….but Cormac McCarthy wrote a really good book.

No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy

June 10, 2023 by ingres77 2 Comments

I sometimes think of myself as a smart man. But I’m not a smart man. I’m just interested in a lot of things, so I have a tendency to look into a lot of things. That gives me a broad but fairly shallow knowledge base upon which I can build my reality. Since I go wherever my interests direct me, I can’t always predict where I’ll be, or what I’ll experience. When I try and set a course, I find that I start to drift […]
