I've been doing this since 2015, and though I'm not going to read a hundred books a year, I plan on doing this for the foreseeable future. I also maintain the Cannonball Read database, and make infrequent updates on our reading habits. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: ingres77's Quick Questions interview.)

Batman Begins

Batman: Year One by Frank Miller

September 25, 2021 by ingres77 Leave a Comment

Batman was created in 1939 as a dark vigilante waging his own personal war against the criminal underworld. The comics built on the pulp detective fiction that was popular at the time, and were heavily influenced by The Scarlet Pimpernel, Zorro, and other masked heroes. In the post-war years, Batman was softened so that he would appeal more to children. Despite still selling well, Batman faced obstacles in the 1950s. The industry itself struggled to hold on to the adult readers it captivated in the 1930s […]

I made it through Jordan – Brandon Sanderson is next: The Wheel of Time review (Part VII)

Crossroads of Twilight by Robert Jordan

Knife of Dreams by Robert Jordan

September 3, 2021 by ingres77 6 Comments

So, I’ve been reading through the Wheel of Time, for those who haven’t been reading these reviews. I started the series in the late ’90s, and kept up with them through the publication of Crossroads of Twilight. When Crossroads came out in 2003, I was in college and had all but stopped reading for pleasure. It wasn’t until about 2009-10 that I started again. By that point, Robert Jordan had died and Brandon Sanderson had taken over the series. It had been almost a decade […]

I’m approaching the end: The Wheel of Time, Book 9 (review part VI)

Winter's Heart by Robert Jordan

August 7, 2021 by ingres77 5 Comments

When I first read these books, I think I made it through Crossroads of Twilight (the next book in the series). I bought Knife of Dreams (the last book written by Robert Jordan before his death) and The Gathering Storm (when Brandon Sanderson took over the series), but I never read them. This book came out just before I went off to college, and right around the time I stopped reading for pleasure. I don’t remember the next book at all. So, I’m about to […]

You need me on that wall…

Call to Arms by Joshua Dalzelle

Counterstrike by Joshua Dalzelle

July 31, 2021 by ingres77 Leave a Comment

I’ve tried reading romance a couple times, and was pleasantly surprised by the ones I’ve actually tried. But I avoided them for years because they all seemed to follow the same basic plot, with assembly line characters and common tropes throughout. Well, I can’t use those things as excuses any longer. This book – and, indeed, just about every military sci-fi series I’ve read – has assembly line characters, common tropes, and very similar, predictable plots. Despite all of that, I generally enjoyed this book. […]

I feel better.

Warship by Joshua Dalzelle

July 22, 2021 by ingres77 Leave a Comment

It’s the 25th century, and humanity has reached the stars (and colonized them). They haven’t found aliens, however, and they also haven’t fought a war in over two hundred years. Everyone is simply too spread out, and the resources are far too plentiful. So the military has become complacent, and their ships are outdated. Even the old ships were built a hundred and fifty years after they were necessary. The technology used to build them is tightly controlled by a corporation, and the military isn’t […]

I’ve made a bad decision, but I’m too stubborn to change my mind: The Wheel of Time (Part V)

The Path of Daggers by Robert Jordan

July 18, 2021 by ingres77 17 Comments

I hated this book. There was nothing in here that was offensive, like using rape as comic relief in A Crown of Swords. But the key plot points in here could’ve easily been interwoven into the last book. In fact, doing so (and trimming quite a bit of the fat) would’ve improved the story considerably. A great deal of this book does absolutely nothing to develop the characters or move the plot forward in any way. If anything, there is a needless addition of numerous […]
