I wanted to like this so much. It sounds so interesting – a supernatural, steam punk adventure with a Gifted Harriet Tubman in an alternate universe. I am so disappointed, because I did not connect with this book at all. It was too gory for my reading pleasure, and I never felt like I had a minute to breath and get to know the characters. Harriet Tubman, in real life, was the kind of badass that puts fictional badasses to shame. I have no problem […]
A Suitcase Full of Rainbow Clothes
Eleanor West runs a boarding school for teens who don’t fit in. The secret is, they aren’t just misfits, they have spent time in a fairy world and desperately want to go back. They are not changelings or half-fae, they are human children who disappeared and came back different. The school is both a refuge and a place to learn how to get a long in world that is no longer considered home. Nancy had been a sunny child who laughed and wore colors until she […]
I didn’t hate it.
Sometimes I read because I am too tired and too stressed to do anything else. In that frame of mind, a book like Sarina Bowen’s Rookie Move is perfect. We met Leo Trevi in Bowen’s all most entirely excellent Ivy Years series. He is the big brother of the unfortunate DJ, whose book is not to be mentioned. He is a nice guy, and a nice character with whom to spend 300 pages. We briefly met Georgia in the book that shall not be named. She’s […]
The Trickster God Isn’t So Funny After All
There was a brief period of time when my mother and I were very close. I was in college and we talked on the phone at least once a week. During this time (pre internet), we sent each other copies of Tony Hillerman books, and listened to a couple of them on tape during road trips. Even when we didn’t get along, we shared a love of pop culture. At some point, while I was in law school, out relationship became strained again. Because of […]
Manic Pixie Dream Lady
I didn’t dislike Devil in Spring. It was an enjoyable read. As soon as I was done and thinking about the review, the words “manic pixie dream girl” came rushing into my brain. It’s not entirely fair. But kind of. Lady Pandora Ravenel is not like the other girls. We know this because everyone says it all the time. She’s different, she’s not like the others, she’s a wild child. And Gabriel Challon, Lord St. Vincent treats her like a child a lot of the […]
Olives Are a Despotic Fruit
I think I say this on every Richard Kadrey review. Richard Kadrey is currently my favorite author and I am ridiculously excited every time he releases a new book. The Wrong Dead Guy is the second in Kadrey’s Another Coop Heist series, built around thief and reluctant Federal Agent, Charley “Coop” Cooper. Like the Sandman Slim series, the Another Coop Heist series is set in an LA where magic is real and the end of the world is nigh. Unlike the Sandman Slim series, Coop […]
