Cozy fantasy and Sci-fi are my self care reads. I love a good magic system and dragons are always welcome. I like my Sci-fi LGBTQ+ positive. YA and Romance fill a sweet spot. And I never underestimate good children's fiction! (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Dome’Loki's Quick Questions interview.)

Dome'Loki's Reviews:

A calico cat sleeping on someone's stretched out legs with the book A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers.

“Old people, young people. Everybody needed a cup of tea sometimes. Just an hour or two to sit and do something nice, and then they could get back to whatever it was.”

A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers

December 4, 2021 by Dome'Loki 7 Comments

I had just finished A Closed and Common Orbit and was eager to read another book by Becky Chambers.  Fortunately, my family gave me A Psalm for the Wild-Built for my birthday, so another one was on hand to be immediately dived into.  In A Closed and Common Orbit, Chambers dwells on purpose.  In a APftWB, she dives deeper into understanding what it means to have a purpose, why even have a purpose at all, and to not have a purpose, as well.  I had been delightfully […]

An intimate story of friendship and its many forms, wrapped in a sci fi setting!

A Closed and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers

If I’m nothing more than a tool, then I must have a purpose.  Tools have purposes, right?  But I’m more than that.  Pepper and Blue… have been telling me that again and again and again.  I know I’m more than a tool.” I was surprised to learn that the second book in Becky Chamber’s “Wayfarer Series” does not feature the same cast and pivots in a completely different direction.  I had become invested in everyone in The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet so […]

“It’s not because–they don’t want me. They want someone who’s going to cast death spells on their enemies. And if I gave them that, I wouldn’t be me anymore, so I might as well not go live with a bag of dicks.”

The Last Graduate by Naomi Novik

November 30, 2021 by Dome'Loki 3 Comments

Picking up immediately after the end of A Deadly Education, The Last Graduate is a gripping read that starts with El holding the cryptic note from her Mum and ends on a terrific cliffhanger.  At one of Novik’s events for the book release she did apologize for both books one and two ending on a cliffhanger.  When she set out to write A Deadly Education she envisioned it ending where The Last Graduate does.  Novik is a writes as she goes author, not a big outliner/planner.  While […]

Two cats curled up, sleeping on a blanket with a book, "The Tea Dragon Tapestry" by K. O'Neill between them

“A tender, lovingly crafted book about growth, longing, grief, and renewal that I want to read over and over again” (quote from Carey Pietsch)

The Tea Dragon Tapestry by K. O'Neill

November 15, 2021 by Dome'Loki 2 Comments

Never has a blurb on a cover so encapsulated my feelings about a book but Carey Pietsch, artist for The Adventure Zone books, has summed up The Tea Dragon Tapestry so succinctly that everything you need to know about it is right there.  If you’ve read the previous two Tea Dragon books you must read this lovely conclusion to the trilogy.  If you’ve never heard about tea dragons and the quote intrigues you, here are my reviews for the first two books, The Tea Dragon Society and The […]

The book The City We Became by N.K. Jemisin lying on top of a clipboard holding a book bingo sheet

Why did I sit on this? I should have trusted Jemisin more, I blame the pandemic

The City We Became by N.K. Jemisin

CBR Bingo Square: Cityscape (To Y’all with a physical copy, did you use Google Lens to look at the animated cover?  If not, and you have Google Lens, I recommend checking it out!) I was hyped for The City We Became coming off How Long ’til Black Future Month and the Hugo Award winning run on “The Broken Earth” trilogy.  However, the first chapter of TCWB was the same as a short story in HLtBFM and for some reason this made it difficult for me to get […]

I think the author could have written two separate books because the multiple storylines only tenuously connect

Bingo Number 4!!!!  One more than last year and a whole month left to go!  CBR 13 Bingo: Travel – Frankie leaves her Southern California home to find herself in Venice, Italy This book was a gift from a friend, as it was written by her friend and she wanted to be supportive, and I like books.  While there are elements that I genuinely like, biggest being the main character, there are other parts that drove me crazy.  A small detail was not knowing the […]
