I really liked A Darker Shade of Magic and A Gathering of Shadows, so I had high expectations for Vicious. I was not disappointed. There is a lot of shifting between perspectives and timelines, but it’s all handled pretty well. There are 2 timelines: now and 10 years ago (both give or take a few days/hours). 10 years ago follows college students Victor and Eli who are both brilliant and very different, yet friends and roommates. They have to do senior thesis projects and Eli […]
The Japanese Ghost-busters go to War
I have only really genuinely enjoyed one short story collection in my life, and it was my introduction to the Yamada Monogatari series (Yamada Monogatari: Demon Hunter). The War God’s Son is the second full novel, and likely third to last publication in the series according to a comment on the author’s blog. It is however this first novel not directly rooted plot-wise in one of the short stories. The first novel, To Break the Demon Gate, was an extension of one of the short […]
Oops I did it again
I have done this twice recently: started a series part way through by mistake. Funny thing is, it’s a similar sort of series and the mistake will probably have similar effects. The Iscariot Sanction is Book 2 of the Apollonian Casefiles series (which is apparently aka the Lazarus Gate series?). It is somewhat steampunk, somewhat secret agent adventure, and somewhat a buddy-cop style story. There are some supernatural happenings in late nineteenth century London, and a secret society connected to the government is investigating/protecting the […]
There had better be follow through here
I am liking the Magnus Chase series so far, as much for the characters as for the humor and adventure of the story. The biggest complaint I have about The Hammer of Thor is that there’s a little too much Loki. Loki’s a good villain, but there’s too much of his presence this time around. Watching Loki manipulate things from the background was more interesting than him begin directly involved in the villainy. I also would have liked to see a little more of Sam, but […]
The effects of reading 4 before 1
I accidentally read book 4 of this series (The Secret of Abdu El Yezadi) before book 1, The Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack, so my perspective here may be a little out of whack, but oh well. I think a lot of things meant to be surprises or reveals were not because I’d already seen the results. Burton complains briefly of feeling disconnected, and the reason for that gets fully disclosed in the 4th book, so I guess I missed wondering about that too, […]
Chess, Blades, and Now I wait
I liked Stiletto. It had a lot of the great elements from The Rook, with a few new ones. There was action, supernatural weirdness, and snark aplenty. The Checquy and The Grafters are in the middle of negotiating their merge and of course things go wrong and get complicated. Much of the story focuses on 2 new characters, one from each side: Pawn Felicity Clements, and Odette Leliefeld, descendent of the founder of the Grafters. The perspective switches back and forth between the two, which […]
