I am a born and bred southerner and transplant to the Midwest. I read because I NEED to (as a former English major, it's in the DNA) and because I'm possibly ignoring frigid temperatures. Until summer, and then I'll just be reading outside. I also enjoy cooking, witty banter, and cheese. All the cheese. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: ardaigle's Quick Questions interview.)

The Perfect Crimes of Marian Hayes (London Highwaymen #2) by Cat Sebastian

September 12, 2024 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

This book is the second and final in the Highwaymen series and the fact that there isn’t a London Highwaymen #3 (and 4 and 5 and 6 and…) is a crushing blow. I loooove this world and these characters and would easily read a dozen more that showed additional POVs of the action we followed in the first installment, or expansions of other minor characters. Sebastian’s writing is sharp and fun, filling me with smirks, and the story is utterly charming, not to mention a […]

“They pick volatile people, people who’re going to perform for the cameras, they wind them up as tight as they can, they engineer a bunch of high-stress situations that are practically guaranteed to make someone lose their shit, throw in some alcohol—and then they sit back and let the cameras roll and the tweets pour in.”

One Perfect Couple by Ruth Ware

September 12, 2024 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

If you’re looking for another summer read to lazily sink your reading teeth into, Ruth Ware is usually a pretty good choise, and this one is no different. With a beachy setting, lots of intrigue and vapid people it’s a recipe for grand escapism. For anyone who is a mindful consumer of reality TV (i.e. you know it’s fake but you love it anyway) this is a fun peak behind the fictional curtain of a British show set on a tropical island meant to showcase […]

“I can’t remember the last murder on Camino Island.” Nat said, “It’s Hoppy Durden. He also does bank robberies.” “I can’t remember the last bank robbery.” “He’s not very busy.”

Camino Winds (Camino Island #2) by John Grisham

September 12, 2024 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

A Time to Kill. Pelican Brief. The Firm. The Client. The Street Lawyer. The Rooster Bar. etc. My reading of John Grisham predates my use of Goodreads so I can’t be sure which I’ve read (as the titles start to blend together) but I have a post from 2016 that said I read “all of his fiction work” so yeah, I am pretty DEEP with Grisham. I’ve found him enjoyable but as the years have gone by a bit less believeable, and a bit more […]

Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by Victora Schwab

August 30, 2024 by cheerbrarian 1 Comment

In five-ish words: Memory, Magical, Love, Connection, Cursed This is a classic example of if the positive reviews are piling up about a book from many people who you trust their book taste, go ahead and read it already! I don’t know why I was hesitant to read it, I think in my mind I conflated it with the movie “Age of Adeline” which seemed drab to me but this book was much more than I bargained for and not at all what I expected. […]

Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo

August 30, 2024 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

One of the unexpected benefits of parenting my stepson is the introduction to books I wouldn’t know anything about. He’s a reluctant (but consistent) reader and I adore reading along with what he has for school, especially know that he’s at a high school level. Do we talk about the books? Absolutely not. But maybe someday he’ll take me up on the offer. (Fingers crossed). This was the summer reading book for sophomore honor’s English and neither of us started eagerly. I don’t read a […]

“Good for her, not for me.”

Yes Please by Amy Poehler

August 15, 2024 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

In five words: Memoir, Frank, Wisdom, Femalehood, Funny This is my fifth time reading this book and I know it won’t be the last. Amy Poehler and Tina Fey are two women I admire for their humor. I had the opportunity to see their live show and it was everything I had ever hoped for, seeing these funny women in person, in their element as friends having spent their adult lives sharing a comedy stage, first at Second City and later on Saturday Night Live. […]
