Tia and Alex continue their adventures when they’re asked to test a military engine drive. It quickly becomes clear why the drive needs some more testing as the two of them are thrown off course multiple times by the drive. As they try to figure out what is going on, they also run across a number of folks who could use a helping hand as well as new allies and enemies.
When I was reading the Brainships books earlier this year, I wasn’t expecting a new one to come out, but here we are. I was excited to see what happens next with this pair. This book wasn’t really what I was expecting of the next part of their story though. Instead of continuing with the archeology, Tia and Alex are just running deliveries. We don’t even really find out what happened with the mission that they were headed out to at the end of The Ship Who Searched until almost two thirds of the way through the book.
However, I did really enjoy the story and the mystery of what was going on with the drive. I also enjoyed seeing how Tia and Alex’s relationship had developed over time and getting to see them in action now that they’re a more established couple. The new cast members were great as well, and I enjoyed seeing more places and sides of this universe. And a lot of the concepts that are brought up are really interesting. I did want to know more about the way things are going with the Courier Services and the way they’re treating Brainships, and I wish there had been more follow up with some of places and people that Tia and Alex visited. Still, it was a really enjoyable outing and satisfying sequel. Four out of five stars.
Bingo – Map – Tia and Alex do a lot of mapping things out: future plans and ideas, navigation routes, etc.
