Bingo: Steal. Little girl is stolen from her mother.
I read Dennis Lehane’s Mystic River recently and found it a solid thriller. I thought I’d pick up another of his books, Gone Baby Gone, but it wasn’t nearly as good.
It seems the book is a part of a series featuring two private investigators, Patrick and Angie. Professional partners as well as lovers, they are brought in on a case about a missing girl. The girl’s mother is negligent and leaves the girl alone while she goes out drinking. The girl is kidnapped and the PIs join the police department to track her down.
At 50% in, I was dreadfully bored and almost DNF’ed it. The first part of the book really dragged. There is a complicated plot about drug dealers and double crosses, which does little to move the kidnapping plot forward. There are a lot of action scenes in this book, but they are surprisingly tedious and not thrilling.
The second half of the book is better, but the action scenes don’t improve much. We do get more answers about the girl’s disappearance, and things take a more interesting turn. The ending is pretty bleak, which I appreciated to a certain extent, given that it’s not simply the good guys win.
Given how much this dragged overall, I don’t think I’m going to pick up another in this series, though if a book seems to have an intriguing plot. I’m open to trying again.
