CBR18 Bingo: Success – This book is set in the workplace, and both the hero and heroine are very good at what they do.
After a failed relationship, Peta has no time or interest in pursuing another – especially not with her new boss at the Royal Hotel, the handsome but infuriating Lee Merril.
I work in a similar industry to Peta and Lee, so it was pretty amusing for me to read about them having to deal with some of the same concerns and do the same work that I’ve done in the past. The whole I was reading, I was feeling very lucky to not have to deal with hotel guests myself.
The grounded feel of the whole setting is definitely a plus in this book. Peta and Lee are ordinary people who happens to fall into a romance; the straightforward conflict and low key drama made for pretty soothing reading. It’s also nice to see people actually doing their jobs in a workplace romance. Additionally, Peta is a pleasant heroine to follow – sensible and competent.
However, the actual romance between Peta and Lee is a bit lacking. There’s tension between them, certainly, because they are attracted to each other but clash over how they think the Royal should be run, but I didn’t see how we went from that point to love and a marriage proposal hardly a hundred pages later. There’s also an awful lot of convenient medical incidents to keep the plot rolling around – childbirth! A car accident! A twisted ankle! – which is an average of one medical incident per every fifty pages, which gets to be a bit much.
