CBR Bingo: Sheep, I cannot believe that I missed this, I have recategorized Strangers: A Memoir as Versus
This is one of those novels that’s always been kicking around in my brain box, because of course it has been. I listen to a track from Blade Runner as part of my work background music playlist, which is about 4.5 hours of scifi movie soundtracks, one track per movie (of ~3:50 in length), designed to be soothing and keep me focused during long allnighters (a consequence of my being a morning person who also only focuses late at night). It’s the “Main Titles,” and in the middle is a bit of Harrison Ford talking, which originally used to spook me and then became part of the charm of the whole enterprise–2am in my 14th floor office overlooking Alcatraz, moody music playing, and suddenly Harrison Ford’s voice appears.
All that to say, I definitely was imagining him the entire time I read this book (despite not having actually watched the film). It’s a quite tight novel, such that there’s a lot of dense worldbuilding tucked away in quite elegant fashion. I’m mildly curious how much of the “because of toxic environment animals have gone extinct, and so having an animal is sign of status” transferred over to the movie–make me giggle to think of Harrison Ford caring for an electric sheep and then lusting after an ostrich and impulse buying a goat?? My sense is that the A plot (trying to stay one step ahead in identifying androids that are becoming eerily human) takes up most of the movie’s time. And while that’s probably narratively smart, I admit to being a bit more into the quirky side bits (and very VERY eye-roll-over the idea of Deckard sleeping with Rachael, like snore boringggg).
Bingo card again because I became confusing:
