This book was INSANE.
I saw this somewhere on my Facebook feed… someone posted they liked it, didn’t want to give any spoilers, and so I just put it on my TBR list and didn’t read the blurb. I was looking for something quick and easy Sunday morning, and this was available from the library, so in to the Kindle it went.
I read this book in maybe two hours. Holy shit, is all I have to say.
The long and short of the story is that a young fashion design student named Dez is desperately looking for a job when she graduates. She meets a young man at a bar who happens to be the son of the editor of the most famous fashion magazine in the world. He gives her the ick, but Dez is pretty pragmatic, and decides she can tolerate Patrick and his rich guy bro act long enough to get an in with Mom. She finagles an invite to the family’s private island for Easter, but the moment she steps on to the sand – and is asked to sign an NDA – she realizes she may be in way over her head.
The Amazon blurb says this is like The Menu meets Ready or Not, and honestly, that was my thought through the whole book. I just rewatched The Menu, and the weird feeling you get as that movie unfolds is exactly the feeling I got while reading this book. The Guillotine is not my usual genre at all, and I’m not sure that it’s a gateway to that genre for me, but it was a wild ride.
This is a book that the reader should go in to cold, so I’m not putting any spoilers in my review. But warning that it is graphic. And by graphic, I mean G R A P H I C. And not in the sexy times way, so reader be warned.
Also, this would make a fantastic movie.
Also also, I have to stress again: this book is graphic. I’ve read reviews that mention the trigger warnings. I didn’t see those, but sometimes the Kindle version just dumps you on the front page, so maybe I just missed them. But, dear reader, take care. This is an angry book. Like, the rage is wafting from the pages. This is a book you wish you could read between your fingers, like when the scary part of the movie comes on. Also, don’t read this in the dark.
