Another from the Sparrows and Amazons series and it’s just what the doctor ordered. Like sinking into a cozy armchair with a steaming cup of tea at your side. So this time the crew is set off on holidays to explore High Topps, a large mountain not far from their lakeside homes. Rumor has it that there is gold in them there hills, and they are aiming to produce a sample before Uncle Jim returns to his houseboat. This will involve much camping out (and very little boating), but there are a few issues to be addressed.
The most immediate is that the region is undergoing a severe drought this summer, and Mrs. Blackett, owner of the land on which they are proposing to camp, is concerned about the possibility of a campfire initiating a spark. So their attempts at finding traces of gold (there is a slate mine on the mountain, and rumours that gold had been found there), are going to be difficult, and the appearance of Slouchy Hat, who apparently has the same goal as they do , complicates matters.
In addition, Mother (stuck at home with baby sister who has whooping cough) wants them to be in contact with her somehow. What to do? Well, fortunately, they have been training pigeons, and they agree to send off a pigeon a day to Mum. Some logistical challenges, but the pigeons actually end up saving the day when fire does break out and pigeon express spreads the new fast enough for the fire brigade to get there in time with their fire brooms.
Yes, that actually is a thing. With the streams dry, they use brooms to beat the fire out. Go pigeons!
