It would be pretty hard to not have heard of T Kingfisher. With her March release of Wolf Worm, she has been everywhere lately, including a wonderful interview in the NY Times.
She is a prolific writer, in recent years releasing three adult titles a year. Kingfisher is an alias for the multitalented Ursula Vernon, who pens middle grade graphic novels. She claims somebody told her when looking for a penname always choice a bird, thus T Kingfisher was born.
Let me start by talking about how I discovered Kingfisher. My first Kingfisher book was A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking. Despite having book contracts with a few imprints, none of them wanted to publish this title. Kingfisher had to self-publish and it went on to win many awards. I love this book, it is simply a delight for readers from middle school through adult.

Next, was a close encounter with Kingfisher at the Tucson Festival of Books. She was part of a panel that was unquestionably the funniest author panel I have ever attended. Being a bit of an author groupie, I did see her again at a local bookstore, and she was once again so funny.
I am currently in catch up mode trying to make it through all her titles, a difficult task as she keeps publishing more. Kingfisher’s range is broad, including gothic horror, fairy tale retellings, fantasy, and graphic novels – written for a wide range of ages. She has an uncanny knack for mixing horror and humor and a way of subtly dropping in social commentary,
