Did I like it/love it/hate it? Loved it
What’s it about? Helen is a successful YA author whose book series is being turned into a tv show. She will be one of the show’s writers despite the fact she has no television experience.
Grant is one of the head writers on the show. He knows Helen from high school, but not for good reasons. Grant happened to be driving the vehicle that Helen’s younger sister threw herself in front of to commit suicide. Helen wants Grant to quit, but this show is a great opportunity for his future career, so he refuses.
Helen’s parents are 100% against Grant in all forms, which really puts Helen in a tough position when she finally acknowledges that she has developed feelings for him. She’s battling so much: writer’s block, her parents’ emotions, and trying to understand why her sister ended her life.
My thoughts: This was a really beautiful modern romance. The obstacles to their partnership were totally believable. I appreciated that the conflict was not a misunderstanding that could have been resolved with 5 minutes of conversation. Also, the way everyone in the writer’s room realized they were hot for each other before Helen and Grant themselves was really cute.
As I’m writing this, I’m realizing how much I enjoyed this book. Originally, in the section above I wrote ‘liked it’ but now that I’m down here in this part of the review, I’ve gone back to change that I loved it.
While my situation is not the same, I also have a younger sister who is no longer living. Despite the fact I know why my sister died (leukemia), I could really connect with that part of the story. Mine has been gone for over ten years so it’s become easier to talk about her without immediately having a strong emotional reaction. But I do still, and often, have situations that I wish I could share with her and laugh about with her.
Would I recommend this to my (other, still alive) sister? Yes
