Honestly this is my own fault. The last book I read, Something in the Walls had promise, but the total execution of the book was off to me and the character development. Same issue here.
Dark is When the Devil Comes follows too sisters, Cathy and Hazel. Hazel goes missing. Plot, some horror stuff, some confusing stuff and then the ending.
Honestly I just didn’t follow this book, similar to Something in the Walls where I spent too much time trying to follow the logic on stuff. It didn’t help that as a reader I kept feeling like I had no idea who was “speaking”. I don’t know if it’s just because I had the ARC, but if not, I think that Pearce needs to set up the chapter headers with the name of whatever character is talking. Too much of me trying to work it out. Also, I know it’s a me thing. I have zero idea why Hazel was written in first person and everyone else was third person. But I hate that. It’s why it took me forever to finish this one.
It was predictable in parts, and also will echo other readers, some disturbing stuff mostly with hair that I recall and just everything was too much information. I just don’t get grossed out a lot, but for me it wasn’t just that parts were gross. I just didn’t like the story and wanted to be done. I mean I have read horror for so long now, it takes a lot for me to be like, this is a bit much.
All in all. I think Pearce was doing too much in this one like she did in Something in the Walls.
