Format in which I consumed this book: audiobook
Did I like it/love it/hate it? Liked it
What’s it about? In a previous review, I talked about my terrible memory and that attempting reviews weeks after I’ve read the book is not a good idea for me. I’m having the same problem now. I cannot remember one single thing that happens in this story. I had to go back to the Libby app and look up the synopsis there to refresh my memory. I feel like I need to apologize to the author for letting her work completely vacate my brain.
This is a sequel to The Wolf King. Near the end of that book, our fmc, Aurora, was bitten by the werewolf king during a dispute. So in this wolf culture, that makes her either property of or a pack member of the king. However, the king’s brother Callum is her boyfriend (who is attempting to overthrow the king) so she wants to be part of his pack.
Then there’s the complication of Blake. He is helping Callum with plans to overthrow the king, but he has very obvious untrustworthy vibes. To combat this traitor aura, he did something in the first book when Aurora was bitten to sort of bond himself to her. Now if either of them is injured, or oh let’s say killed for their betrayal, the other will also die.
The wolves are at war with humans for many reasons. A major one is that Aurora is the daughter of the human king and they all think she was kidnapped by the werewolves. The wolves are also battling disputes among themselves. Not only because Callum is trying to claim the throne, but also because there seems to be some evil wolf legend resurfacing. While all of this is going on, Aurora is trying to figure out how to break the bond between herself and Blake. She has also discovered that her mother was a werewolf and that mom did not die of natural causes but it was dad who killed her. I think I’m remembering that her brother pops up at the end of the story too.
My thoughts: I don’t have many, because of the aforementioned memory problem. However, I do recall thinking I should have read this with my eyes, rather than my ears. I think I would have liked it a lot more if I had done so. A lot of my bookshelf contains this type of fantasy story but I just kept getting annoyed with the audiobook narrators. I had many of the same problems from the first one. The guy parts were too quiet that I couldn’t understand what he was saying and the girl parts had breathless emphasis when none was needed. I want to know how this all ends though, so I plan to read the third one in hardcover or ebook.
Oh, now I’m remembering one other thing that I found annoying! I swear the phrase my teethe ache and I want to bite, bite, bite appeared like 10 to 15 times. So the exact repetition was the first annoyance, and the second was that Aurora is thinking this so many times, she was bitten by a wolf, her mother was a wolf, AND YET she is somehow in denial that she is a werewolf??
Would I recommend this to my sister? Mmmm…probably. Although I would definitely recommend she read it in book form. But now that I say that, I don’t think she gets annoyed by all the weird little things that annoy me.
So that’s review #8 in the bag!
