Another series of manga that I really enjoy, You and I Are Polar Opposites initially followed Suzuki and Tani’s developing relationship and has now branched out to have three sets of people we’re following. Suzuki is outgoing and cheerful, while Tani is shy and nerdy, and at this point they have been together a year and are in a sweet relationship. They’re probably my favorite duo just because I like their level of communication and support of each other, as well as Suzuki’s fun character. Natsumi is extremely introverted, while Kentaro is kind of dumb but devoted and kind, and the two of them have been going out for a little bit. And the final duo, Azuma and Taira, are just friends, but the popular and beautiful Azuma has a crush on the self-critical and gloomy Taira. This sort of plot expansion inevitably happens in shoujo manga like this, and I enjoy the whole cast working through their teen angst and their messy feelings.
They’ve all reached third year of high school, which in Japan means preparing for the nightmare of university entrance exams. Everyone is studying non-stop and trying to decide where to try to get into. I like that the story is progressing along but I’m also going to be sad when it’s over! This volume is definitely more bittersweet than previous volumes, especially because so much of it is taken up by Azuma crushing on Taira and then more of Taira’s self-loathing monologues. I’m continually kind of baffled why Azuma is so taken with Taira, but there’s someone for everyone, I guess, and I do hope it works out for them. The other two couples seem to be nicely proceeding along throughout this volume. I’ll continue to follow along when any future volumes show up.
