Everyone I know is here to celebrate my birthday. One of them wants me dead.
I didn’t expect anyone to throw me a surprise birthday party. My husband, Adam, would never do anything like this, so I’m touched my friends and coworkers went to all this effort.
It’s the perfect night — until it all starts to unravel.
Adam and I argue. Our teenage daughter, Caitlyn, storms off after I refuse to let her leave. I search the house to check that she’s okay. She’s not outside. Not upstairs. There’s only one place the basement.
I open the door and call her name. Then I hear footsteps behind me.
Before I can turn around, I’m shoved. Hard.
When I wake up, I’m told I had too much to drink. That I tripped down the stairs. That it was all just an accident.
But I know the truth — Someone at my party tried to kill me.
As always when I don’t like a domestic thriller, spoilers below. But seriously, this one isn’t worth it.
So the big question is who tried to kill our heroine by shoving her down the stairs?? Who would even want to?
Everyone. That’s who.
Good god this woman sucks. The author keeps tossing in things like, oh yes, my awesome boss [cough cough who I’m blackmailing because I caught him cross dressing in the city once]. Oh yes, my best work friend [cough cough who I’ve stolen like….every professional opportunity from because I’m blackmailing our boss]. And so on and so forth. I get that the author wants to introduce multiple suspects, but the end result is that I was rooting for whoever shoved her to finish the job. She’s AWFUL! She cheats, lies, blackmails, is just a giant bitch in her internal monologue, and after a certain point the only real surprise was that this was the first person to try to kill her!
I hate read this one and rooted for the killer the entire time. Spoiler alert, the ending was disappointing.
