Old friends reuniting for a royal wedding? How timely! I’m sure everyone will be so glad to see each other again after years of very determined not speaking.
Ten years ago best friends Beatrice and Elowen, rogue Clare and the valiant Galwell the Great banded together to save the realm. They succeeded and it ruined their lives. Since then they’ve been burying themselves in their various vices trying to forget the past. But when the queen of Mythria sends you an invitation to her upcoming wedding, saying no isn’t really an option. Time for a reunion! When dark forces once again threaten all they love, can these former friends get over themselves and save the realm for a second time?
I very much enjoy a story where we look in on heroes years after they’ve done their saving of the world. What do you even do after that? That’s exactly the question these characters struggled to answer, especially after one of them died in the first attempt. They’ve basically all been drowning in survivor’s guilt for ten years. The overall tone of the story is very cheerful though, much more a Princes Bride fantasy than a Game of Thrones. There is magic and hamsterjays and many silly equivalents to our real world. And when it turns out that the realm once again needs a hero (or heroes) you know this little group will step up whether they want to or not.
Also I cracked up at Elowen’s coping mechanisms in the beginning. Hiding in the middle of a haunted forest watching television and writing impassioned fan fiction in between deliveries so you never have to leave or speak to another human? Sign me up!
