You say you like stories that feel like a mental warm hug. Which of your favorites stand out as good examples of that?
In recent years I’ve gained a real appreciation for nice characters doing kind things for each other. Real life is grim-dark enough and my tolerance for reading about it has gone way down. I’ve loved both of Travis Baldree’s books. Tress of the Emerald Sea was my first Brandon Sanderson book and I thought it was very sweet. Also the comfort of books that I’ve re-read over and over such as Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series. I hope to someday be as cool as Granny Weatherwax.
Is there an author you automatically read anything they write, no blurb, cover, or title necessary?
I’ll snatch up anything by Seanan McGuire and her various aliases. She writes so fast that there is always a new book about to come out! Right now I’m on the waiting list for the next Wayward Children at the library. Ilona Andrews, T. Kingfisher, Holly Black, I just know I’ll have a good time with any of their new releases.
Have you always been a reader, or was there a specific book that sparked your urge to fill your mind?
I’m pretty sure I learned how to read out of spite. I had a big green hardcover of Grimm’s fairy tales that no one had the time to read to me so I was for darn sure going to read it to myself. I must have been about 7 at the time and it was all downhill from there! Now I’ll basically take a chance on anything calling itself a reimagined fairy tale. I blame Terri Windling and Ellen Datlow’s adult fairy tale anthologies back in the 90’s.
How many chapters do you give a book to grab you? Or are you a “must finish every book” reader?
My completionist soul insists that I read every book to the end. Amusingly enough at the moment I am struggling mightily halfway through The Basic Eight by Daniel Handler. I thought it was going to be a light read but I just want to yeet the main character into the sun. I’m sorry to this man but I might have to just peek at the last chapter and give up.
What’s the last TV show you binged?
I’m right in the middle of binging Echo. I still watch everything Marvel puts out, I’m the problem, it’s me.
