Clearing my KU backlog
It’s been a moment. I have been reading, but a lot of it has been comfort rereading. These three romances are each quite different.
Light Up the Lamp
A hockey M/M romance- definitely not my usual reads. I dont read a lot of hockey books- it’s not a sport i follow, and i mostly don’t love sports romances. I also have a certain degree of caution on M/M romances. This was an interesting second chance romance- a mid career hockey player is unexpectedly traded to a low ranked team, where his first love is a new coach. Gil has never understood why Sebastian ghosted him once Gil was drafted, and has a lot to unpack.
It was an interesting read, if a little too neatly resolved. Somewhat frustrating – Gil has grown up as one of three brothers, pushed to succeed at hockey by their pro player dad. The issues this has resulted in are shown, but i am not sure that it will all resolve.
Rare Danger
Romantic suspense by the doyenne of African American romance. This was quite short – a novella. A rare book dealer arranges for fraud and causes a family friend (the heroine) to be threatened by his criminal friends. Luckily she has recently met and fallen for a private security expert who is able to help protect her. Plus points for the description of debacle blind date. Major negative points for the casual gun ownership and use (even if responsible).
It was a solidly plotted and well structured read, and good happily ever after.
Not my kind of hero
Pippa Grant is generally one of my go to reads- crazy pants stories that are still very human. This one features a recently divorced reality tv(home Reno) star and her daughter moving to the rural ranch her uncle left her and dealing with the skeptical small town.
Good story about how none of us are entirely who we seem on paper, and that assumptions can be a bad idea. But the teenage daughter is a soccer genius- it would be helpful if the terminology used to describe soccer was accurate – it’s not a goaltender, it might be goalie, definitely a keeper.
In the end all of these were reasonable, but none of them was what i was looking for.
