I love how much food is central to Jackie Lau books and how I’m basically guaranteed to find something fun and lighthearted in her stories. The whole premise of Three Reasons to Run sounded like it would be a delight, and I’m so glad I got to read it!
Yvonne has been in a relationship with Carl for five years, engaged for two, and in that time she’s slowly been realizing that it wasn’t a relationship that fulfilled her or she could see a positive future for. So on the day of her wedding, just as she gets to the altar, she turns and runs away. Luckily she runs into Leo, who was late after receiving his first speeding ticket, and he’s more than happy to get her away so she has the space to figure out What Next.
This was a really fun story and I loved the friendship that grew between Leo and Yvonne as they spent more time together. I also really loved Yvonne using this abrupt change in her life as an opportunity to reevaluate who she is and wants to be, including putting energy into her friendship with Shauna that had been lacking in recent years. Leo having had a crush on Yvonne since he first met her two years ago at her engagement party was also navigated so well, in my opinion, where we see the internal feelings but first and foremost his concern is making sure Yvonne is comfortable and happy.
I had a lot of fun with this, and I’m definitely looking forward to the next book, featuring Evan Mok and his friend Jane, who are getting married! Jackie Lau books really are guaranteed to be something warmhearted and fun, and this was the perfect story for this week.
