I read both of these books as actual real physical books, which for me is a big deal. I was over my aunt’s house and she was like “you have to read this book” about the first one, but I only had the weekend to read it, because she borrowed it from the woman she babysits for (and she’s crazy – my aunt). So I hit my timeline because I had a timeline, but also because the book was good! Then, mom of the kids she babysits for bought the second book, and the timeline was on again! I read the second one nearly as fast, and enjoyed it nearly as much! They’re similar, but not the same. There’s definitely a menacing vibe throughout both of the books though, which was fun! Ooh much less fun though – trigger warning about domestic abuse and major gaslighting for both of these books.
This is not my first Freida McFadden book, so I knew this one would be fast paced!
The maid – Milly starts with a new rich family. Right away we know something must be off, because Milly has a record, and the family doesn’t seem to notice as they still hire her. Nina (the wife and mom) is weird to Milly. She goes between friendly and stone cold bitch. Her daughter is mostly an asshole to Milly too. The husband is of course amazing and polite and handsome.
Milly cleans and tries not to start any trouble. She can’t help herself though, so she’s frequently in trouble.
Of course things aren’t what they seem, and Milly steps in to help. She figures out the family’s secret and actually kind of saves the day. She also gets a hot Italian boyfriend out of the deal.
My Rating: 4
We find Milly once again looking for a job at the beginning of this book. She’s trying to finish school, but she’s working for a lady who lunches. Milly watches her kid so often that the little girl actual calls her Mommy, for which Milly is promptly fired. It’s actually kinda hilarious, and a great way to start out the story. Her hot Italian boyfriend had to return to Italy to take care of his mom, and she has a new white bread boyfriend that seems just fine, but totally not for her.
Milly finds a new family to clean for, and of course they’re rich and kinda aloof. There’s the normal vibe of menace throughout and you don’t know who to trust. Milly cleans the sparkling house every day, but she knows there’s something weird going on. She also starts to notice that someone is following her around in a car at weird times.
Since she can’t leave well enough alone (it’s kinda her thing) she tries to figure out what the eff is going on in this fancy house. She does some accidental sleuthing, gets into some trouble, and gets herself out of it. We really don’t know what’s going on most of the time either though, so that makes it more fun.
My Rating: 4
I just saw that Book 3 (The Housemaid Is Watching) is coming out in June!
