This book filled me with rage. You must read it! There’s no way for me to write a proper review without some spoilers, so be warned. I will do my best to keep them to a minimum. This appears to be Tracy Sierra’s first book, and I can’t wait to see what she does next. It’s a tight, well written thriller that I had a hard time putting down, but also wanted to throw across the room because, as I said, rage.
A mother is alone at night in her colonial home during a blizzard with her two young children when she hears strange footsteps in her house and sees the figure of a strange man down the hall. Forced to make a quick decision, she quickly and quietly ushers her children into a tiny secret room in the oldest part of the house. It’s cold and she has to keep her children quiet as this strange man searches for them and attempts to coax them out of hiding. When she finally recognizes who this man is, she becomes even more terrified and realizes she must save her children herself.
This is the first part of the book and it’s tense as hell. The rest of the book involves this woman dealing with all the men in her life who don’t believe her. The police, her abusive father-in-law, her neighbors and even her own husband. If “believe women” were turned into a suspense thriller novel, this would be it. This is where the rage and the urge to throw the book (a bad idea since it was an audiobook on my phone) really came into play. Once again, this woman finds herself alone and no one can help her but herself.
I don’t know if “enjoyed” is the correct word for how I felt about this book. But I was definitely compelled to finish it as fast as humanly possible. In conclusion, if you didn’t already know this. Never talk to cops. Always get a lawyer.
