Here we go again with blue alien smut! Actually the two main aliens in these two books are red. So we’ll go with red alien smut. I continue to have issues with the “mating is only for procreation” themes in these books, but they’re still fun for me, and like I said in my previous review, I’m a part time escapist! Nothing screams escapist more than RED ALIEN PORN. Sorry, sometimes I go with the more demure “smut”, but it really is basically alien porn.
Anyway, here we go! We travel back in time to book four with Angie’s gladiator. Apparently, there was a hot wait list for this one because I read books five and six before four was ever available!
We’ve heard about the red “twins” in previous books. They’re apparently “a’ani”, which basically means they were cloned for war / sport / gladiating. Nobody tells Angie that though, and she just thinks the two red guys following her are weird. At least everyone has the language translator in this one and there are only stupid misunderstandings and not language misunderstandings!
Angie is pregnant, and she has no idea how that happened, which is totally scary. She mopes around the ice planet sad that nobody will include her in anything, but also constantly thinking “but it makes sense, I’m pregnant”. Like nobody should want her, or value her opinions on anything. Allll of these ladies should’ve been shot up with antidepressants when they were awoken from their slumbers on the slave ship they were rescued from!
The red twins Vordis and Thrand are following Angie around, and she doesn’t know why. Vordis basically falls in love with her though, and Thrand is just competitive, so he makes things harder.
There’s a stupid set up where all the men are building huts on the beach as competitions for the women they want to win, and it could’ve very easily been explained to Angie, but of course that wouldn’t have made for a long enough story! I guess I get really annoyed by misunderstandings that could be cleared up with one conversation. Angie tells Vordis in no uncertain terms to leave her the hell alone. Then she proceeds to wonder why this alien, who does not know subtlety or women leaves her alone. It was mildly infuriating. They are very cute together though, and we get to learn the secret of Angie’s pregnancy. 3.5 stars.
This is the story of the other twin, Thrand, and his lady friend Nadine. The narrators call her “NUHDEEN” though, which messes with my head. I say it “NAYDEEN” internally. Whatever, not important!
Angie’s book really made Thrand seem like a jerk and kinda dumb, but this one redeems him. He’s cocky and competitive, but also really cute. He sees that Nadine is sad one day, and finds out that she misses running with her sister. So they go for a run, and he adorably can’t figure out why people would run without a destination. Same brother, same!
They have to get over his whole connection to Angie, and Nadine gets jealous a few times. It’s really funny though, because Thrand calls her out on it instead of just being confused. I think he’s my favorite male alien so far, because there’s no bullshit with him. Desi is my favorite human woman, with Lauren coming up close second, and Brooke third.
So of course Nadine and Thrand have challenges and all that normal crap, but their story was refreshing and with much less bullshit than the others. 3.5 stars for Nadine not being sad sack mopey all the time and Thrand having a sense of humor.
