Talyn: Seed of Darkness is a new comic series from Banished Shadow, written by Caspian Drake & Geoffrey Rickett. With comic one, this is all setup and atmosphere. We start in the past by meeting The Vorden Hunters – Vlad and Amelia. They want to eradicate all magic users. They’re pretty evil and think they have a just mission to save the world from the Black Death plague. We see them fight the witch in the forest. She plants a magical seed to be reborn. In the present day, we are introduced to a troubled and formidable woman named Talyn. She is practicing with a punching bag and cursing the world. In her flashback, she has memories of a child named Tessa. Something has happened to her, and Talyn blames herself.
I stumbled upon this on Kickstarter as I often do to find indie comics. Kickstarter comics are always a pleasant surprise. It’s like I’ve bought a secret present for myself because I always donate and promptly forget about it. I was drawn to the illustrations and the magical themes. The sharp cheekbones of all the characters are intriguing. I also like how it explores the futile idea of trying to snuff out magic using evil means. They may have hunted down the witch, but her magic will be reborn. I’m guessing into Talyn by the title. Talyn isn’t a born hero and has made mistakes. I’m excited to see how she finds her way to her powers in future issues. I’d recommend this series if you’re a fan of the Underworld and Blade films where they mix futuristic tech and the past ancient enemies.
