I read a fun short story by Shannon Mayer in the Kicking It anthology. I’m always on the prowl for a new paranormal/urban fantasy series, so decided to pick up Midlife Bounty Hunter in an audible sale. I’m also in my forties, so thought it be nice to read about a hero around my age.
The first book in the Forty Proof series follows Breena returning divorced to Savannah. She is living with her ex’s cousin and looking for work. He recommends her for a bounty hunter job, but little does she know it involves the magical world. She is told to meet someone at an old house, which turns out to be a job interview. She has to find her way through meeting some magical beings and the hidden house. When she got married, she asked her Grandma to wipe her memory of magic. But upon her grandma’s death, it starts coming back. Good thing her childhood magic lessons come in handy. She gets the job and is brought on temporarily to hunt down troublemakers. She gets some magical weapons from a handsome weapons maker named Crash. She also befriends a talking skeleton who becomes a sort of sidekick. She discovers her evil ex is trying to sell her grandma’s house. She’ll do anything to prevent it from happening.
I liked Breena because she was resourceful. But my main gripe is how she kept referring to herself as old. Ok, she might not be in the same physical shape as the younger hunters, but 41 isn’t that old. They kept joking she was menopausal. Also, her ex sucks and didn’t like that she gave up magic for such a jerk. Glad it didn’t work out! The ageism was easily overlooked, so it was a fun read. I’d recommend the audio as the narrator helped sell the character and her spunkiness. Read this if you like urban fantasy and need something to binge on.
