Left for dead in a snowstorm, Declan can’t remember what’s brought him there when he’s rescued by scientist Grace. But he knows he’ll have to be quick if he’s going to be able to catch a serial killer who’s slipped through his fingers once already.
Harlequin romances are my comfort reads, but I haven’t explored much of the Intrigue imprint, which publishes romantic suspense. This seemed like a fun book to try out due to the central mystery – a nameless man who looms out of a snowstorm, on the trail of a killer he can’t remember.
The premise is not quite delivered on – Declan remembers who he is and what’s going on fairly quickly – but I found myself being swept up by the mystery all the same. I enjoyed the lyrical writing and the close connection that Grace has with the natural world, and the small town setting. The mystery was a compelling one, and I found myself being thrown off the trail several times, which made every twist and turn of the story only that much more nail-biting.
However, I felt like the character of Declan was a little bland. While I enjoyed the dynamic between him and Grace, he did feel more underdeveloped in contrast to her. I believed in the romance between them, but I didn’t believe that they were in love already by the end of the book. The black moment also came out of nowhere and felt forced – I think the book would have been better without that penultimate fight.
Disclaimer: I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley. This is my honest and voluntary review.
