Fourth Wing is the story of Violet Sorrengail, a cadet in the Basgiath War College. She was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, but her mother, a general, decided that she had to enter the Rider Quadrant. DRAGON RIDERS? I AM SO IN! A lot of Cadets die during the training, and Violet isn’t physically up to a lot of the challenges, because she has Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS). That is never explicitly stated in the book, but a close friend of mine has it, so I am familiar with the symptoms. I recently found out that Rebecca Yarros has it as well.
Violet is warned to stay away from the Obligatory Hot Guy, Xaden Riorson, who hates her because her mother had his father executed. So of course, they end up in the same squad and have to work together closely. Very closely.
I read this book a couple of months ago when it was ALL OVER Booktok. It seems to be really divisive. People either really love this book or think it is the worst thing ever published. I for one, enjoyed the Hell out of it. It was refreshing to have a Heroine with disabilities. Violet is sassy and smart and I really enjoyed reading her story. Of course, this book ended on a cliffhanger, but there are only six months between the release of this novel and the next one, Iron Wing (which I have already pre-ordered), so the wait is tolerable. Last I heard this series was projected to be five books, and I can’t wait to see where else Yarros takes Violet, Xaden, and us!
