I had this book on my TBR for a loooooong time, and I’m so glad I finally got around to it. It was every bit as good as everyone said.
Vin is an orphan who grew up hungry in the slums. She always knew that she had an ability she called “Luck” that helped her in tricky situations. What she didn’t know was that she was actually an Allomancer, or a “Mistborn”, someone gifted with the power to draw magical abilities from metals. She is trained by Kelsier, the leader of a criminal crew. Think Danny Ocean, but with magic. While he has performed many criminal acts in the past, his current obsession is to take down the Lord Ruler, a ruthless tyrant who has reigned for over a thousand years, and bring collapse to The Final Empire.
Kelsier is one of my favorite characters in a long while. I love a cocky hero. He gave me some serious Malcolm Reynolds from Firefly vibes. The story revolves around Vin finally finding her family in Kelsier’s crew, and I loved every single character. There is also so much triumph in the face of brutal odds. There is also a lot of defeat in the face of brutal odds. This is a book that kept me guessing up until the very end. I loved it, and I’m already halfway through Book 2.
*Audiobook Review*
Michael Kramer is a FANTASTIC narrator! Just phenomenal! His voices were very distinct, and his pacing and inflections were absolutely spot on. I don’t know if I could ever go back and just read this book without hearing his voice in my head. Frequently male narrators don’t do a great job with young female protagonists, but he managed to make Vin sound like a young girl, and not a whiny brat. I cannot recommend the audiobook highly enough.
