Bob Ross: My First Book of Nature (My First Bob Ross Books) and Bob Ross: My First Book of Colors (My First Bob Ross Books) are both by Robb Pearlman (text) and the artwork of Bob Ross. Yes, that Bob Ross. Happy little clouds and happy little trees Bob Ross.
Both board books I might have read before but could not remember. Therefore, if I had, it was reading them again for the first time (which is a fun experience). And if I haven’t, it was actually reading them for the first time. Both books focus on the art of Ross but use language from Pearlman to help push the theme. The My First Book of Nature highlights the snow-capped mountains, river rocks, the trees, and all the nature sights we see while exploring. Done in a manner that you can almost hear Ross speaking (I know I heard him during the “happy little clouds” line), what we loved about his painting for us/teaching us on his television show is there. And with My First Book of Colors, we see how he used such colors as bright red, but also Prussian blue, Indian yellow, sap green and so many more. The lines of the actual paintings done by Ross bring you into the image, studying it.
If there is one issue that I have with these books is that the covers are almost identical (the same Bob Ross body/head, the style and font of the text and even a mountain). The Nature book flows more like a story (and has more “earth colors), whereas the Color book is more of a laundry list of colors (and has the colors), but both are just fun books to give as gifts to a child who has a parent that is a Bob Ross fan, or your own child/grandchildren if you are.
