The year was 2014. We had cured cancer. We had beat the common cold. But in doing so we created something new, something terrible that no one could stop. The infection spread, virus blocks taking over bodies and minds with one, unstoppable command: FEED.
Now, twenty years after the Rising, Georgia and Shaun Mason are on the trail of the biggest story of their lives—the dark conspiracy behind the infected. The truth will out, even if it kills them.
Backstory: Mira Grant is a pseudonym used by Seanan McGuire who is one of my absolute favorite authors. She writes more horror/science stuff under the Mira Grant label, and is primarily handling fantasy as Seanan McGuire.
Feed is one of her earlier works. I had read it awhile back, but the later events in the series turned me off and I never finished it. However, Grant/McGuire did a really thorough job looking at human behavior and science in this book, and looking at how the world would handle zombies if it were a contagious disease we had to live with. And in a post-COVID world, people were reaching out to her and saying she really nailed it.
I decided to try the book again. And I LOVED IT. Guys, Feed is a really good book. It’s a well-written and exciting story with gut punches, good dialogue and a very well thought out depiction of what life is like 20 years after the zombie apocalpyse and how we live as a society. The leads are great- two adopted kids in their early 20s who are best friends and sibling journalists.
As I was reading it, I thought to myself, “well I can overlook the plot thing that’s coming that I hated because this story is so dang good!”
I’ll get into the details more on my reviews of the final two books in the series but honestly, as awesome as Feed is, the other two books don’t feel worth it. They’re just disappointing. And I can’t say just read Feed because Holy Cliffhangers Batman. You’ll be driven on to the next one.
It’s very whiplash inducing going from the high of Feed to what follows…I wish I could just recommend this one on its own.
