Have you ever watched a Swedish crime series? It’s a bit of a different experience. Everyone is kind of cold. And I don’t mean that as a pun. Yes the weather is cold, but the people are a little bit frosty too. I felt a bit of this reading the first book in the Aremorden series. Along with frosty, they were kinda tough. They left the house when there were feet of snow on the ground. It made me think of people living in Buffalo. I guess you just have to keep on keeping on.
Anyway, we start this story with Hanna basically getting fired from her job as a cop in the city. She gets home, expecting some comfort from her boyfriend of many years to find he’s leaving her for another woman. It’s a sad start for Hanna. Her older sister helps her out by offering her vacation home in Are, which is basically a resort town. Hanna can stay for as long as she needs to get herself together. She lays around and cries and drinks wine and sleeps for about a week. Then a teenage girl (Amanda) goes missing and it spurs Hanna into action.
The rest of the book is us getting to know Hanna, Amanda and her family, and the other detectives on the case, along with them all trying to figure out what happened to Amanda. I liked the characters for the most part, and the story was definitely interesting. I’m going to continue reading this series.
