This is my favorite one of these so far. Everything is finally coming together.
This is also actually the first of these books where I feel emotionally invested in Kate/Curran as a couple, which is kind of mind-boggling if you think about it. I’m really not reading this for the romance, but the worldbuilding and the side characters, and also Kate is a badass. Here’s the blurb, because I just can’t right now:
“Kate and the former Beast Lord Curran Lennart are finally making their relationship official. But there are some steep obstacles standing in the way of their walk to the altar.
Kate’s father, Roland, has kidnapped the demigod Saiman and is slowly bleeding him dry in a never-ending bid for power. A Witch Oracle has predicted that if Kate marries the man she loves, Atlanta will burn and she will lose him forever. And the only person Kate can ask for help is long dead.
The odds are impossible. The future is grim. But Kate Daniels has never been one to play by the rules…”
The conflict here was really stressful but exciting. The stakes were really high, and even though you know everything is going to be okay because that’s just the type of books these are, it doesn’t feel like the authors cut any corners to get there.
I found it particularly satisfying that so many characters from previous books made an appearance in this one, and that so many of the smaller conflicts from past books resonated in this one.
Next up is Hugh’s book, and I have been promised a satisfying redemption for him, so we’ll see how that goes! And then it’s on to the finale.
