Braineater Jones (as he calls himself), has a problem. He woke up dead in a swimming pool and he has no idea who he was before he was undead. He also doesn’t know why he’s undead and why there are a whole bunch of undead people around these days…these are just some of the many mysteries that our self-described private dick has to tackle. Taking place in the 1930’s this is a fun little play on a noir novel as Jones deals with the “dames”, the sharp dressed men with guns, a partner who is only a head, and several mysteries that might be connected.
I saw deal on Book Bub and took a .99 cent chance on it. And I”m glad I did. For almost the whole book I was really enjoying myself. I can’t say that it completely held together by the end, but there is a nice level of humor throughout the novel and I found myself just having fun with it…until the end. It just ended and that was unfair, because a new interesting chapter/problem for Braineater Jones seemed to just be unfolding. But I went on with my life not crying because it was over, but glad it happened. It was the book I needed to get out of my funk and write my first review in a very long time–so yay for that!
Annnnndddd…ETA: When I popped over to Goodreads to leave my review I learned that the author lives about 15-20 mins from me, so that makes me even more glad to make his review my first of the year.
