Good lord. This was agonizing. I started this book for Halloween Book Bingo and it is now December people. This past week has been me cleaning up library borrows that I keep re-requesting but never want to finish. This had an interesting premise that quickly went to [redacted] and I got tired of reading it. The characters started off interesting, and then as a friend of mine said, they slid real quick into paper-thin caricatures. This was in the end, just a really bad horror novel that should have been good.
“Hide” follows a group of people that descend on an abandoned carnival in order to win a grand prize. The competition takes place over 7 days with 14 competitors and you have to hide so that no one can find you. I am realizing as I type this out, this sounds really dumb. Ah well. We mostly follow the character of Mack (who has a deep dark secret) but we also get insights into the other players, and those who are hosting the game.
Issues I had:
-There were people with the same freaking name who were hard to track.
-People were just hiding. It gets boring to read about people hiding.
-This book dragged. Like the initial pages were so good and got me so invested, and then I went, oh my lord is this it??? Why I had to reborrow this book so many times.
-The writing started to grate on my nerves and you would also think an abandoned carnival would up the fear factor but it didn’t.
