This was a Reese Witherspoon book club entry, and I fully expect that at some point we’ll see a limited series.
I know I’m supposed to be totally over unreliable narrators, but this was just good fun.
The narrative conceit of having about 85% of the book as a statement to the cops lends itself really well to the unreliable narrator, so it’s actually a lot less annoying than it could be – I kind of expect that the whole, entire, unvarnished truth is not exactly what you tell the cops!
Ava is caught up in a counterfeit handbag scheme with Winnie, the Official Evildoer of the novel. It’s a massive operation, with multiple operators returning fake bags to high end stores for a refund, while selling the real ones online at a discount.
Once the police interview portion of the novel is complete, however, a slightly different picture begins to emerge.
Highly enjoyable, well worth the time.
