I am going to boo the heck out of the cover of the newest release, I loved the older version of the cover I had when I was a teen. I really did love this book ridiculously as a teenager, and I still enjoyed it. Pike really did just go all out with murder and really grown up topics. I thought this one did a great job with the horror and fantasy elements.
“Bury Me Deep” follows Jean who is off to Hawaii to join her two best friends, Mandy and Michele. Jean was delayed and doesn’t fly out with her friends, but she ends up sitting next to a guy named Mike. And on the way to Hawaii, Mike dies. The experience freaks out Jean, but she quicks dreaming of and seeing Mike, he doesn’t seem to be dead. He seems to still want or need something from Jean.
I just loved this. You have Jean slowly investigating what is going on. She wants to go to Hawaii to enjoy the beach and scuba diving with her friends. But there are frictions going on with her friends because of the two guys they are hanging out with (Dave and Johnny). I started to wonder if Jean was going to be a Too Stupid to Live character, but she really wasn’t. When someone else who she is close to ends up dead, she turns into a version of Nancy from A Nightmare on Elm Street in making sure she figures out what is going on and stopping it.
The writing was easy to get into and so was the flow. It’s a young adult book that was written in the 90s so there are some things that I think some readers are going to have an issue with (the two friends who are depicted as overweight and “slutty”). And there are a few scenes that had me going, good grief come on.
But I can’t lie, the 11 year old me who read this still is alive and well and loved this re-read though it cost me way more than I think it was worth (I bought it via Kindle).
