Spy x Family is written and drawn by Tatsuya Endo. It’s the story of an elite spy, known only by his handle, Twilight. He is an agent for an organization in Westalis and master of disguise. The agency has learned that a far-right group in the country on their Eastern border, Ostania, is wanting to start a war with Westalis. Twilight is dispatched to discover what the East is planning.
His target is the leader of the National Unity Party, Desmond Donovan. A complete recluse the only time he is seen in public is at social gatherings for the exclusive school attended by his son, Eden Academy. To accomplish his mission, Twilight needs to enroll a child at Eden to get close to Desmond. Enrollment happens in seven days. In that time he has to find a wife and child to create a sham family! To start this mission a new identity is created, Loid Forger, psychiatrist.
Yor Briar raised her younger brother after the death of their parents. Taking any job to keep them afloat, by the age of twenty-seven Yor has become an accomplished assassin, known by the handle “Thorn Princess”. By day she is a civil service worker in Berlint, the capital of Ostania. In these suspicious times, being single at her age is making Yor stand out. Fate brings Twilight and Yor conveniently together.
When finding a child, Twilight gets more than he bargained for with tiny Anya, a telepath. She is a fan of a spy show and when Anya hears Twilight’s thoughts instantly presents herself as the best candidate for adoption. Anya hides her ability not wanting to be sent away. She provides consistent comedy relief reacting to people’s thoughts. Loid and Yor are completely ignorant to each other’s secret identity. Anya is the only one who knows exactly what is going on. Having been in and out of orphanages several times, she ardently wants to make this found family work.
The whole thing has a pre-WWII vibe, with the spies and plots between the West and East. This first volume covers the founding of the Forgers and the challenges of getting Anya into the top-drawer Eden Academy. It is not sufficient for Anya to pass the entrance exams, a family interview is required. The Forgers need to learn how to behave like a family to keep up the charade.
I highly recommend Spy x Family, it is a lot of fun with some hilarious laugh out loud moments. My introduction to the property was through the anime adaptation. Having watched that first, I could hear the voice actors as I read. This was especially funny when it comes to the headmaster of Eden. While our family waits for more seasons of the anime to be released, we will be catching up with the manga.
