BINGO – MONSTER
Brothers Andrew and Jake are barely scraping by running their dad’s old auto-body shop. Andrew too is trying to mend his broken heart that he was left with after local bartender Vanessa dumped him. Unfortunately Vanessa has already moved on to Dennis, the Vice President of a breakfast technologies company. Oh, and there are giant, hideous, horrifying monsters suddenly attacking the town. The entire town has evacuated, except for these four who stick around to help save the town.
In the very first attack, Jake is bitten by a monster, and that monster’s blood gets into the wound. This turns his normal human arm into a terrifying monster arm. Jake, being as resourceful and creative in his problem-solving as he is, uses this arm to great affect to keep himself, his brother, and Vanessa safe from attacks. His brother Andrew is a natural leader, at times being a little too fool hardy in his decision making. But together, they’re a great team. They bicker and fight and love each other in the way that only siblings can.
Overall, I enjoyed this collection of comics that I picked up as an impulse buy at Comicpalooza in Houston this year. The various issues all have the colors done by different people yet there is an overall consistency throughout the entire volume, and the art is interesting and accentuates the story well. There’s a lot of humor in how the brothers are drawn, especially in their facial expressions. The only real issue that I had with this collection is how Vanessa’s face was drawn in moments of high emotion. The artists decided to twist her face into some really grotesque shapes that I think was supposed to capture the fear Vanessa was feeling with a lot of movement. Instead, it just comes across as horrifying to the reader.
