Bingo square – NEW – new book and a new-ish genre to me
I don’t really read a lot of romance, but when I do it usually comes with a strong dose of fantasy or sci-fi (think Deborah Harkness or Gail Carringer–heavy romance elements but no really super explicit sex scenes). I decided to dabble and try out the genre again after a long hiatus with Go Hex Yourself by Jessica Clare. It didn’t hurt that there was an adorable black kitty on the cover either.
So, I am clipping along reading this light-hearted and cheeky magical romance with your usual suspects–the brooding dark scoundrel who has a heart of gold, the naive but witty and hyper-talented protagonist, the funny old lady, the snarky roommate–and then I get into the sex and masturbation scenes and I remember, oh yeah, I don’t do THIS very often. I won’t get graphic, but as someone who doesn’t read of ton of erotica, this isn’t anything crazy explicit, it is just not something I consume in my usual reading diet. A minor spoiler, the cat is actually more than a regular cat and he likes to watch. Definitely less cute now.
Clare’s writing style is easy-breezy and I enjoyed the magical system she builds here. It feels like a realized world and I could definitely see her setting multiple stories in this universe. If you are in the mood for some erotic shower scenes and like a funny magical rom-com then you won’t be disappointed. I don’t think I am going to be a convert to reading tons of romance any time soon, but it was definitely a fun change of pace from my usual genres and styles of writing.
