I just read this about half an hour ago and this was wonderful. The plot, flow, and the two characters we get to meet in this will do your heart in. I just honestly wish it had been longer, but alas, short story.
“Unknown Number” follows a person getting a text message from an unknown caller. The unknown caller seems to know a lot about them and starts telling them personal things. And then the texts take a turn and leads one to wonder about parallel worlds.
So first things first, I loved the idea of this being a twitter thread that you can read. It makes it feel more real I think. If I had to read this in electronic or hard copy format I don’t think it would have resonated as much. Also you get to read others comments to the tweets as you go along and it makes the whole thing feel more immersive and real.
I know that some people won’t love this or argue is this really science fiction. But I think it’s a cool way of pushing the boundaries a bit on how we tend to read stories. One of the reasons why books like “House of Leaves” are so popular is that it makes you have to interact with a physical book. Same with Paul Tremblay’s “Disappearance at Devil’s Rock.”
I loved every piece of these tweets and the twists we get in this story. You should definitely have some tissues nearby because you will tear up or in my case cry.
