Once again, I’ve been reading like crazy but slacking on my reviews. Time to clear the backlog!
I don’t follow many authors on social media, but I do follow Zoje Stage’s Instagram. When she gave Blood Sugar a glowing review, I immediately added it to my TBR. The book begins with a brief, but very unsettling prologue. It’s not immediately clear what’s happening, but when you figure it out…! Let’s just say you also figure out what kind of book this is going to be, and whether you’re ready to strap in for the ride. Trust me – it’s a good ride.
The meat of the book alternates between our main character, Ruby, being interrogated by police, and flashbacks to her life. Ruby, we understand, has done some very bad things. In fact, Ruby has killed more than one person. Maybe even as many as three. So when the detective puts three photos face down on the table, Ruby starts to wonder…who is number four? And we, the readers, start to wonder, just how high is Ruby’s body count, really?
I don’t want to get too much into the plot because I don’t want to spoil anything. The plot is tight, and the writing is breezy and engaging. This is a page-turner for sure. The best part, though, is trying to reconcile the Ruby we get to know – smart, compassionate, laser focused and incredibly driven, animal lover – with the Ruby who has done such Very Bad Things. The author really works the flashback structure, sometimes leaving threads dangling in a way that leads the reader to start speculating wildly, only to bring everything home at the end.
This is an excellent mystery/thriller, perfect summer vacation reading.
