But wait, there’s more… Flavia De Luce is back! Thought you had seen the last of her? Well, think again! The Weed That Strings the Hangman‘s Bag by Alan Bradley is the sequel to The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie (see review here). To start, this was a good sequel. It had all the elements you loved from the first book, but it wasn’t redundant! I usually prefer the first book of the series, and the same applies here, but I still loved this book.
The Weed That Strings the Hangman‘s Bag is set in the same place, time, etc. (just a few months later). But this time, instead of one death there are two! Separated by time, linked by unlikely things, Flavia finds herself taking the role of the detective (again, your welcome Inspector Hewitt!) Rupert Porson, the visiting puppeteer has had a “mishap” with electricity and is now dead. But who did it? And why? Flavia looks into this, all signs point toward a suspicious death years earlier, that the local police couldn’t solve and gave up on (so of course Flavia is interested, she’s always looking to prove her worth to them).
As this mystery unravels, or should I say these mysteries, we meet a lot of new characters. Pay attention! These characters are important later on.
If you were a fan of The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie, and want more Flavia De Luce, then I highly recommend this book. It is just as cunning, clever, tricky, and interesting as the first, and I was very much satisfied. And don’t worry. This definitely isn’t the last of Flavia De Luce!
