Meddelin Chan is a twentysomething Indo-Chinese woman living in LA with her mother and being slowly henpecked to death by her loving but overbearing family. She works in the family wedding business with her mother and three aunts (Big Aunt, Second Aunt, Fourth Aunt), and they have their biggest wedding yet coming up. When her mother announces that she’s set Meddy up on a blind date, Meddy decides to just go with it, and see what happens.
What happens…is that Meddy accidentally kills her date. Oops. And then accidentally gets her mother involved…who 100% on purpose brings in the rest of the aunties. What ensues is pure slapstick chaos as Meddy and the Aunts try to get rid of a body while also running an elaborate traditional Indo-Chinese wedding with 2,000 guests on an island. Oh, and did I mention that Meddy’s lost true love shows up??
Here’s the thing. This book is so! much! fun! I don’t want to give away any of the many (many) plot twists, so I’m going to keep it light on the details. And you definitely can’t think too hard about any of it – there are plot holes here you could hide far more than a dead body in. But Meddy and her family are warm and hilarious, and there’s clearly so much love here for big families and Indo-Chinese culture. Just keep your mind in soft focus, and let it all wash over you. There is a ton of heart in this book (more heart than logic, for sure), and I laughed out loud more than once. This is a great palate-cleanser book, for when you just need something light and happy. And so many hijinks!
