More post apocalyptic fiction! This time, we don’t really get into the why things happen and what caused this, this book takes place long into the future, where there are metahumans with super powers, and heroes and villains. Not Your Sidekick, by C.B.Lee tells the story of Jessica Tran, living in a futuristic town where her parents are minor celebrity super heroes. Her sister is a much bigger super hero working for the League of Heroes.
Jess is bi, and has a big crush on Abby, star volleyball player and popular girl. Abby’s parents are inventors, and have built a series of robots that help with household chores, and there’s a model that folds laundry. I would like one. Jess gets an internship at Abby’s parents’ company, Monroe Industries and gets to know Abby better. She has two best friends, Bells and Emma and their interactions are fun.
The plot slowly meanders to the end and then things pick up considerably when Jess starts putting together that all isn’t what it seems among the League of Heroes and it’s leader, Captain Orion. Abby has some secrets (that an adult reader can see coming a mile away) and ends up working with Jess at the end of the book. The worldbuilding is veeery slight. I assume there will be more as the series progresses, and that’s just fine with me. I’ve read similar fiction where the audience doesn’t know much about the world the book is set in because the main character does not. So you learn things as the main character does. I understand this approach is unsatisfying for some people, but it doesn’t bother me. I immediately downloaded the next audio book. I liked this a lot.
