Pleasure Unbound by Larissa Ione builds an interesting world of demons that aren’t all evil. The first book in this older paranormal romance series follows Tayla a demon-slayer who meets a demon doctor named Eidolon. He runs a secret demon hospital where he vows to help anyone who is hurt who is in need. Even the beautiful and dangerous ones who plot to kill his kind.
Early in the book, Tayla has a shocking revelation that turns her world upside down. She is forced to team up with Eidolon to get answers, especially when her demon-slayer friends turn on her. Eidolon wants to figure out more about the slayers but has a strange urge to protect this dangerous woman. He isn’t sure if it’s his demonic nature, seeing how he is a sex demon, but has to see it through. Over the course of the book, Ione reveals more demon lore as these two can’t seem to keep their hands off each other.
If you’re not into spice, this is not a book for you. It’s not erotica, but the sex demon protagonist has sex on the brain. In theory, it makes sense, but I was hoping for a tad more subtly in this book. I loved Richelle Mead’s Succubus series where it gave a level of depth to the idea of power coming from sex. Here we have a doctor who is trying to save someone while thinking about sleeping with them. It was a lot for the beginning of the book. Tayla comes off way too naive and brainwashed for me. I stuck with it but did put it down a few times out of frustration. She is shocked a group of demon killers would betray her after keeping secrets from her for years?! It reminded me a lot of Selene at the start of Underworld. Once she finds out the truth, the plot started to click for me.
If you’re into the idea of a demon doctor falling for a demon slayer, try this book out.
